How to work out fuel cost
A UK gallon is 4.54609 litres, as the Weights and Measures Act 1985 sets it[1]. Fuel is sold by the litre, but mpg counts gallons, so every sum needs that figure.
What a gallon of petrol or diesel costs at our UK averages.
- Litres used = miles ÷ mpg × 4.54609
- Journey cost = litres used × price a litre
- Cost per mile = price a litre × 4.54609 ÷ mpg
Take 100 miles in a petrol car doing 44.6 mpg. That uses 100 ÷ 44.6 × 4.54609 = 10.19 litres. At the latest average of 171.7p a litre, that costs £17.50, or 17.5p a mile.
If your car shows litres per 100 km, multiply that by the kilometres and divide by 100 to get the litres. To turn mpg into litres per 100 km, divide 282.481 by the mpg. That figure comes from the same Act's gallon and mile[1].
How to work out your car's mpg
Fill the tank to the brim and set the trip counter to zero. Drive as normal, then fill to the brim again and note the litres it took. Divide those litres by 4.54609 to get gallons[1]. Then divide the miles on the trip counter by the gallons.
Is petrol or diesel cheaper per mile?
At the latest averages, diesel costs 15.6% more a litre than petrol. So a diesel car needs more than 15.6% better mpg than a petrol car to cost less per mile.
At 44.6 mpg for petrol and 48.4 mpg for diesel, a mile costs 17.5p in petrol and 18.6p in diesel. So the diesel car costs more per mile.
The answer turns on the price gap and the two cars' mpg, not on how far you drive. A fuel that is cheaper per mile stays cheaper over any number of miles.
What a year of driving costs
Cars in England averaged 7,100 miles in 2025, in the Department for Transport's National Travel Survey[2]. The survey covers England only, and DfT says its 2025 figures are not fully comparable with earlier years[2].

Business mileage
HMRC sets advisory fuel rates for company cars. From 1 September 2026, the petrol rates are 14p, 17p and 27p a mile, by engine size[3]. The diesel rates are 15p, 16p and 22p a mile[3]. If you use your own car for work, your employer can pay you up to 55p a mile tax-free for the first 10,000 business miles. It is 25p after that[4]. HMRC says the changes aim to ensure the rates "better reflect the average costs of motoring"[5].
